American Airlines Fleet Service Practice Exam

Cargo weight is typically measured using a calibrated scale because this method provides an accurate and reliable measurement of the actual weight being loaded onto the aircraft. The use of scales ensures that all cargo is weighed precisely to avoid overloading the aircraft, which is crucial for safety, compliance with regulations, and proper weight distribution. Accurate weight measurement helps in planning and maintaining the aircraft's balance and performance during flight.

In contrast, estimating weight based on previous loads can lead to inaccuracies due to variations in the type, density, and packaging of the cargo. Using a standard weight formula might not account for the specific characteristics of the shipment, which can vary greatly. Lastly, saying that measurements are not required before loading overlooks the critical importance of weight data in ensuring safety and operational efficiency within the aviation industry.
